Huh. Hearing all this makes me a little sad. The first episode seemed solid enough. Too bad.
Yeah, I'll totally talk about my impressions (probably won't make it a full WIW, because I Never actually finish those ). And I don't think I Have any of the DVD specials. I Just have whatever the "usual methods" is giving me.
Well, at least I now know that the cock laser isn't contextless.

You may have to eat those words later on. Well, not so much the fanservice (which ain't that bad), but the creepiness certainly ramps up a lot over the course of the series. Laser cock is only the beginning.
I do want to say, I didn't find the cock laser creepy. Just strange. I mean, tentacles I could have dealt with. Fanservice I nearly expected. But...cock laser? Really? What the hell kind of fetish was taht even servicing!? Is there a porn.alt.cock.laser group that I haven't been told about?

Mai Otome is.... yeah, huh, there's no good way to put it. It has lots of shiny stuff. It has lots of stuff you'll laugh about as a sci-fi nerd. And it has...
You know what? I'm just going to SBlock all the creepy stuff I remember from Mai Otome for easy reference. Contains some spoilers.
Spoiler: Show

...huh.
And not even a hint of *any* of that in the first episode.

Mai Otome feels like rather dodgy Mai Hime fan-fic, where someone has shoved the Mai Hime cast into a fantasy setting, but with some modern tech, and more of a focus on the fights. But the story is kludgy, quite a few of the plot twists come out of nowhere, go nowhere and no-one really cares, there's some stuff that's just plain wierd
Spoiler: Show
and the fight scenes aren't as good as they could be. It has the potential to be quite good - the basic world building and set-up is decent, the character designs and some of the setpieces are kinda cool, but it just doesn't really go anywhere.
The sequel (Zwei) and prequel (Sifr) aren't fantastic either - Zwei I seem to recall had a magic psychic dolphin with an earring, and Sifr has some OK fight scenes, but it otherwise a bit meh. The manga is into full-on skeevy territory - there's one part where a character makes one of the Hime's beg to be spanked, in a way that feels more fucked up than actual hentai. It still holds together better than the Mai Hime manga, but that's because Mai Hime manga was just bad.

In fairness, I'm pretty sure they're not preteens. They're pretty young, though.

The best thing about Mai Otome is definitely the pun in the title.
what's the pun?

Like all the best puns, it's multilingual. Otome is roughly the Japanese word for maid (meaning a young or virginal woman), and the Otome on the show are, essentially, maids (in the Mahoromatic sense rather than the real world sense.

Yeah, they are about 14-15, I think, but that doesn't make it any less skeevy. Especially given that the majority of them are drawn very young. I suppose the show is one of those that I enjoy more when I'm watching it, but when I try to give it any serious analaysis those flaws become pretty big. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I'd enjoy it all the more without the fan service.

Add me to the 'Saw Otome first' camp. I actually prefer Otome, but that's mostly because I prefer less angst in my shows, and hime REALLY upped the melodrama near its second half. COULD do without some of the odder fan service.
